Scabies mites burrow through the skin and feed on the skin tissue. They cause wart-like growths around the beak, legs and vent. The symptoms that you can observe are: itching and pecking in the feathers, reddish-brown edge on the beak and pimples on legs and at the vent. How should you treat this condition? Treat the bird infected with scabies with insecticide. Serious lesions should be soaked with insecticide for a few days. Then smear them with acid-free Vaseline.
Scabies mite in parakeets
Take for example the scabies mite in the parakeet. In parakeets, the scabies mite infection causes changes in the cere above the beak. The beak itself can also be affected by the mite.
The tissue starts to proliferate, turns white and shows many holes. These holes are caused by the mites: they dig tunnels through the tissue, as it were.
Mites penetrate deeper and deeper into the tissue, so that, for example, the beak can no longer be used normally. This can lead to serious deformities. The presence of mites causes irritation so that the bird starts scratching. As a result, the infection can spread further to the skin around the eyes, legs, toes and other parts of the body. The enormous consequences of an untreated infection can be great. The beak of the budgie can be so seriously affected that deformities occur. Always consult a veterinarian for professional advice.
