Do you have a dog at home? If the answer is yes, then you naturally hope that your dog is healthy. A healthy dog at home is simply much more pleasant than a dog that suffers from all kinds of things. But there is always a chance that your dog suffers from certain symptoms, without you actually knowing it yourself. One of these things is a Patella Luxation. It all sounds a bit strange of course, do you want to know what it is and what you can do about it? Then read on quickly to find out!

What is Patellar Luxation?

What is Patellar Luxation?

It all sounds very difficult, but it is not. The term Patella Luxation simply stands for a condition in which the disc of the knee is not properly attached in the dog. This can therefore come loose at any time. This is of course not pleasant, a dog should be able to move and walk properly. Normally the kneecap should sit in the socket, but this does not happen in dogs that suffer from this. This results in a lump that is too far inward, so the kneecap is not deep enough in the groove. This causes it to come loose during certain movements.

This condition is caused by the dog’s genes, so it is really a predisposition that a certain dog can have. There are various dog breeds that are sensitive to this. These are: the English and French Bulldog, Pomeranian, Yorkshire Terrier, Chihuahua, Miniature Pinscher, Dachshunds, small Terriers and Miniature Poodles. But patella luxation can also occur in various other species.

The treatment

If your dog is examined by the vet, this doctor will use an orthopedic examination to see if there really is a knee condition or if the problem has another cause. Photos can also be taken of the bone, so the doctor can immediately see if there is anything else wrong with your dog. There are different degrees of this condition. The first degree is that the kneecap can be manually pushed out of the groove, but will come loose again by itself. With the second degree, the kneecap is already out of the groove when the dog moves. With the third degree, the kneecap is completely along the groove but you can put it back. With the last degree, it is definitely next to it.

Cost of the treatment

The costs for the first meeting are including 2 x-rays € 150, – on average. For the operation you will spend approximately between € 550 and € 850. This includes the x-rays that are taken after the operation. Also pain relief and antibiotics that are administered during the operation are included in this price. The aftercare and check-up are also included. The total price tag for the treatment is therefore approximately between € 700 and € 1000 euros. However, these costs are without pain relief, tranquilizers, antibiotic treatment and other additional medicines and procedures.

Insuring your dog

You can also choose to insure your dog , the big advantage of this option is that with certain insurers you will be reimbursed for almost the entire treatment. This is of course ideal if you have a dog that is known to be at greater risk. It depends a bit on the type of dog whether this chance is great. We have already mentioned this briefly, but you can also find this on the internet. You will of course pay an amount per month, but if you have to pay a lot for the dog, this is always less. Do you want to take out cheap dog insurance? Take a look at our pet insurance comparator , so you can see exactly what the price is per month for a particular insurance. The advantages of the insurance in question are also given here, so making a choice is even easier.
