It is sometimes difficult for bird owners to recognize a sick bird. Birds will naturally always try to hide that they have a condition or are sick. After all, a sick or weak animal is an easy prey for predators. Only when the bird is very sick will you as a caretaker notice that something is wrong. If you find your parakeet lying listlessly on the bottom of the cage, you should go to the vet immediately. However, a sick parakeet does give off a few alarming signals that can put you on the right track in the early stages of the disease. Pay particular attention to the following symptoms: The parakeet does not eat and/or drink much or at all, it sits with puffed up feathers on both legs. The parakeet sleeps on two legs, the parakeet no longer talks and/or chirps. The droppings are watery and there is “tail bobbing”. The parakeet’s head feathers are also soiled with mucus. The parakeet often loses its balance and the feathering is also no longer beautiful. The beak and/or nose cap appear “porous”, the bird sleeps more than normal and is no longer interested in its surroundings.
treatment
If you are certain that your parakeet is sick, you should immediately catch it and separate it. This can be done in a so-called sick cage where the temperature can be made pleasant for the bird. Given that most parakeets have a fairly fast heart rate and a higher body temperature, it takes them a lot of energy to keep this at a healthy level. By increasing the ambient temperature for the sick bird, it costs the sick bird less energy to keep its body at the right temperature and the natural immune system can better tackle the disease. If you have separated the sick bird, it is important to contact a (bird) veterinarian as soon as possible to proceed with any treatment. A (bird) veterinarian can also check whether the rest of the population is healthy. Poor ventilation in the bird enclosure, in addition to incorrect nutrition and dirty drinking water, causes most diseases in birds.
