A dog is usually quite sociable in the house. At least it is all fun and games until the dog gets sick. For example, it can happen that a dog suffers from an inguinal hernia. This is not so nice for the animal, which is why it is usually decided to proceed with an operation. By means of the operation, the dog can get through the day normally again.
An operation for an inguinal hernia is not as easy as you might think. There is still a lot of doctoring needed to make sure everything goes well. The dog also needs to be anesthetized, otherwise he would feel everything from the operation. This can also be quite expensive. What exactly is an inguinal hernia (perineal hernia)?
Before we look at the price, we must first look at the meaning of an inguinal hernia. An inguinal hernia, also called a perineal hernia, is that there is a hernia in the area around the anus of your pet. This area consists mainly of a large number of thigh muscles. In older dogs, the muscles in this area become weaker, the muscles are no longer attached to each other.
During defecation, it is possible that abdominal fat is pushed out between the muscles. This is also known as the inguinal hernia. In addition, older dogs suffer from prostate enlargement, which makes the chance of squeezing out the abdominal fat much greater than before. There is a chance that the dog pushes a bladder or intestine into this area by pressing. This then gets stuck and this is of course not good for the dog.
The cost of a hernia operation for dogs
Fortunately, an inguinal hernia is not something that occurs every day. If your dog needs surgery for this, the surgery will quickly cost €300. This is excluding the costs of previous treatments. Why is inguinal hernia surgery necessary?
Treatment of an inguinal hernia in your dog is necessary because the bladder or intestine can become severely pinched. This can prevent the bladder or intestine from working properly and there is even a chance that it will die. Surgical treatment is performed in two phases.
First, your dog will be treated by castration. The prostate plays an incredibly important role in causing the inguinal hernia. By castrating, the doctor ensures that the prostate is many times smaller so that it will no longer have any influence. Then the inguinal hernia will be repaired as before. This can be done in two ways.
In a transposition, the pelvic floor is tensed. The muscle is released on one side and then reattached to the hole. The second method involves placing a net at the openings of the hernia. The net is only tightened if there is a recurrence. This means that there is a high chance of a new hernia.

As you may have read above, it is not very cheap to have a dog operated on for an inguinal hernia. It is therefore true that many people are always a bit shocked when they see the bill for the treatment. But fortunately there is a way in which you spend a lot less money on the operation of the dog.
