Coccidiosis in birds

Coccidiosis in birds

[ez-toc]

Coccidiosis in birds is a disease that occurs frequently in birds. This condition can be treated well with the right medication if identified early. Coccidiosis belongs to the so-called “single-celled” parasites (protozoa). These protozoa are so small that they can only be viewed with a microscope. These protozoa nestle in the intestines and liver of the host (the bird). Protozoa multiply in large numbers in the intestinal wall cells and destroy the intestinal cells. Some of these are excreted in the faeces and are called oocysts. These oocysts can be demonstrated in the faeces of the birds. Coccidiosis is one of the best-known diseases among bird enthusiasts that can still cause major problems for birds despite all modern medicines. The severity of the symptoms depends on the degree of infection. With a minor infection, the bird will have little or almost no trouble. With a slightly more serious infection, the faeces will be somewhat thinner. In case of a serious infection, the birds will lose weight and the droppings will be as thin as water, causing the birds to drink a lot. The oocysts in the droppings must first develop before they are infectious to other birds. This means that mature oocysts that have been ingested by the birds cause the disease. This ‘maturing’ occurs most quickly in a warm, humid environment. The birds can become infected via drinking water, drinking troughs and baskets. That is why daily hygiene is of great importance in combination with a good loft climate. The loft must be cleaned at least daily and regular cleaning with a burner is a must. In addition to keeping the loft and the drinking troughs etc. clean, the animals must also all be treated at the same time. Change the medicated water daily in the morning. By treating the drinking water with certain medicines, the birds can become free of coccidiosis again. However, it is sometimes necessary to repeat the treatment if oocysts are still found in the droppings. An examination of the droppings (one week after the last administration of the medicines) is highly recommended.
